The old arched gate in Amsterdam with the name "De Brakke Grond" on it, is a back-exit of a building that has his entrance at the other side of the canal. The mentione of the year 1624 does not necessarily mean that the gate actually dates back to 1624. It could be older and from the workshop of Hendrick de Keyser. The name means "brackish ground" which indicates the medieval state here when the fresh water of the river Amstel and the salt of the Zuidersea made the ground brackish.
