Fashion lab

At the end of the exhibtion of yesterday's post there was an item of no professional people who like to make clothes  for themselves as a hobby. This woman likes to make replicas of historical costumes from the 18th and 19th century and even wear them herselfe.

This boy has a free spirit and is inspired by  traditional Dutch costumes as this one from Volendam and gave it a modern twist.

This woman likes to make and wear vintage from the thirties and the fourtees.

Fashion Exhibition

The Amsterdam Museum has an exhibition "Fashion Statements" about fashion and identity now and then. It was a comparison between  historical costumes from the eighteen and nineteen centuries and the modern ones.

I must say I didn't appreciated this idea very much, the modern ones were very over the top.

I prefer to see the delicate handwork of the old black ones.

At the exhibition of  "1001women in the 20th century" in Amsterdam, some pronunciations of some women were written on the wall.

It is all bilingual in museums so no need to translate.

1001 women

A view at an exhibition I visited in the Amsterdam Museum named : "1001 women in the 20th century" Here you see the inauguration dress Queen Juliana  wore in 1948. Next to her is the Royal cradle in which all the princes and princesses have slept.

I always have been curious to have a close look at this simple hat with jewellery she was wearing.

Paintings

Young shepherdess 1645 painted by Govert Flinck a master pupil of Rembrandt.

Another portrait by Govert Flinck from 1654. Probably this is Johan de Moregnault, a representative of the States of Zeeland. Look at that (modern) face, you could come across him now too I think.

I saw these paintings in the Amsterdam Museum last week. 

Former Orphanage

The courtyard of the Amsterdam Museum.. In the Middle Ages, the Saint Lucien's Monastry was situated here and in 1578 the City Orphanage was established. The Orphanage was home to thousands of children between 1580 and 1960, many of them had lost there parents to the plague.

And as it is still now.

The orpahns wore all the same clothes in the colours of the Amsterdam Coat of Arms. The children also received an education here. The older boys attended school elsewhere in the city, while the girls received instruction within the orphanage, and were trained in domestic skills.

In memory of the time of the orphanage, the Regents Room has been left intact. Here used for a fashion exhitbition last summer.

Reflection

A reflection  of a coffee set in the window of one of the cupboards in the boys's courtyard of the former orphanage in which the boys used to keep there tools. The orphanage was in 1975 after 400 years turned into the Amsterdam Museum. Tomorrow I tell you more about it.

Puck & Hans

The Amsterdam Museum has brought a retrospective exhibition about an iconic dutch fashion duo Puck & Hans. 

They were widely know in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s for their striking creations.

Their clothing items were characterised by a mix of exclusive materials, quality and playfulness.

They also organized fashion shows at typical Amsterdan locations, like Artis Zoo.

The Museum had used some unusual locations for the exhibit as well,  here in the governors room.

To get all the items together they had  made a call to private owners to borrow their clothes for the exhibition. The respons was enormous, hundreds of items were delivered, people who had clothes of them never had thrown it away, they had always kept it like this bridal dress too.

 This sign at the end of the exhibition about 100 years of Schiphol Airport you have to look twice at to figure out what it means. "SO GO ON" is the message.
