The Wilhelmina bridge in Deventer, named after Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands over the river IJssel. It was built between 1939 and 1943, but blown up by the German occupying army in April 1945. After the liberation it was rebuilt in 1948.
The bridge is world famous for the film "A bridge to far" which had to replace the Arnhem Rhine bridge, that could do no service for filming because of the nearby post-war buildings.

Een donkere dag, maar toch een mooie foto van deze brug. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis is a beautiful bridge with its arch reaching for the heavens. Maybe it is honoring those of you who lost their lives. It tells the world the Germans did NOT win the battle. When I visited Ypres, Belgium, I learned very quickly what the Nazi’s were capable of doing. It broke my heart. I have never gotten over what I saw and what I learned in that 4 day visit. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for visiting my blog. Genie
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThanks for sharing this interesting history of such a lovely bridge.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenthe arch is nice and airy looking (if that makes sense)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI like the arch too, thanks for sharing some of the history of this bridge
