Tourist in own country

Posted by PicasaSome places are famous as a tourist hotspot. This pitoresque village "Giethoorn" is such one, situated. in the province of Overijssel. It is a sort of little "Venice of the North" with much water with everybody in little boats, called "punters" They used to have a big stick to get pushed forward (like in Venice), but now I saw they are all motorized with electric engines. We call them "whisper-boats", because they make no noice.

In the old part of the village is only one doorway a path for pedastrians and cyclists.

On both sides of the water are farmhouses.

Most farmhouses have a thatched roof.

This brave tourist was happy cycling on his hired bike over the small bridges.
Sometimes you have to look at your own country with the eyes of a tourist to see its beauty.

  1. Love this little canal and family-filled boat. We do that here in the delta rivers that lead to the bay.

  3. What a sweet little village and so pretty too! I love the way they can get right up to their house in their boat like that.

  4. This looks like a wonderful place to be a tourist. So beautiful and picturesque. You are absolutely right about being a tourist in your own country. When I lived in Arizona I was always amazed at how many Arizonans had never been to the Grand Canyon - one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World in their own backyard!

  5. How very pretty and the little bridge is so... beautiful I'm not usually very comfortable on boats but this little one would be just fine!
    Have a lovely day!

  7. Ik ken die plaats - ik ben in IJsselmuiden geboren, niet zo ver van Giethoorn. Prachtige fotos - makes me very nostalgic.
