Monday Mural

This mural has been painted by artists who had squat this house in the eighties in de Spuistreet in Amsterdam. For a long time it was not clear what would happen with this building and some others in the same street. They were empty so all kind of persons started to live here clandestine and in 1987 this serpent was painted.  Now the city council has decided to renovate the neighbourhood and the mural will be removed.

(and I though it a perfect choice for this new year of the dragon!)

  5. I love this piece! I really like that 2nd shot too-the melancholy look on the girl's face. I'm glad you have some pics of this if it will be removed. That upward tail is really amazing.

  6. I always marvel at how the street artists get to the high vertical surfaces... This one is colorful, but if the building is being renovated for upgrading the neighborhood, it should be removed. So glad that you got these photos first!

  10. It is a real pity because the painting is a super piece of art. They should start a petition.

  11. Like the others, I really like this piece. The energy and planning it took to make this piece must have been extraordinary. It's a pity it will be removed. I'm actually astonished to know there are abandoned buildings in Amsterdam. I spent two weeks in your fair city recently, and was impressed with the renovation that has occurred across the town over the years.

Thanks for participating in Monday Mural. I hope you'll come back.

  12. It is a shame it can't be kept or at least reproduced on the new buildings after it has stood for all these years.

  14. That is sad, Marianne, because some of the mural is very good. But also, some has been defaced. They could just paint over it if they were inclined to do so. I guess the buildings are now more valuable than they were 30 years ago.
