Teacher

This very nice sculpture in Amsterdam of a teacher and his pupil is situated in the area "Jordaan". The teacher is Theo Thijssen  (1879-1943), a wellknown dutch writer, teacher and socialist politician.

He wrote a famous book "Kees de jongen" (Kees the boy) in which he describes the poor circumstances people lived in Amsterdam in the early years of the 20 th century, with bad housing and poverty. He writes very touching about the daily life in a schoolclass seen from the view of the boy Kees and how the school and the teacher are a safe heaven in those troubled times.

  2. I think school and the relationship between a student and teacher is still very important in the lives of so many kids around the world.

    Touching sculpture!

  5. That is a pretty cool sculpture. Sounds like Theo was a pretty cool guy himself.

  6. Oh what a lovely piece. What emotion it portrays. He was obviously a teacher that invested much of himself in his students.
