Taphophile Tragics

Today I will show you the cemetery Staglione in Genoa, Italy again. This is the new part with recent graves. In the back behind the trees,  you can see the galleries I showed you last week,

The recent graves are much more simple than the ones from 1800.

To reach the higher parts, we had to climb huge stairs.

Against the hills, behind the trees, were more graves in little houses, but we didn't make it so high. Some members of our group did so and they saw an impressive grave of the "Ferrari family".

Everything was so huge, look at this statue at the entrance. Next week I will show you some last photos.

This is my contribution to Taphophile Tragics

  1. Gosh, they really made a big deal of the graves. I think I like the more modern simpler ones.

  4. I was most impressed by the amount of flowers placed at each gravesite!

and I am sorry I didn't venture far enough upwards to see the Ferrari Family!

  5. This place is magnificent! Beautiful shots. Were the flowers plastic? You see that in some cultures...but not in The Netherlands I would think?

  6. This has been an astounding glimpse of Staglione in Genoa, Marianne. I am glad to have seen the photographs from all three of you. I don't think I could have managed all those steps, even for such a view. HOwever, did not your first post say there was a train for tourists?

There is a distinct difference between the graves from before the 20th century and graves nowadays. Maybe back in the old days, it was only rich people who had monuments anyway. Very few of my family have monuments. I am finding only unmarked graves - which is sad.

  8. I could wander around that cemetery for days! The older monuments are quite impressive, but I like the smaller ones too. Not sure I could have managed all those stairs!

  9. Oh the stairs viewed from your last photo look impossible. What an amazing cemetery. You were lucky to see it, even if you didn't make the climb up the hill.

  10. Such amazing images, you are so right the difference between than and now is quite remarkable. I think it was too much before, it seems that was more for the people left behind than for the person who had gone oui!

  11. dit is wel heel speciaal en mooi, een beetje jammer dat het een kerkhof is , maar het wordt meer en meer "in" kerkhoven te fotograferen

  13. Wow, that's a crowded cemetery, judging from the first two photos! The graves between the trees that look like small cathedrals to me are very impressive! Thanks for sharing.

  16. this is a beautiful setting! it must be a challenge to dig the graves and to get the monuments up those mountains!

  17. Oh, my. Is that a castle in the background of the one picture? This place is quite amazing, although it looks rather crowded compared to our cemeteries here in the States. I'm afraid someday we will run out of space to buy our dead. So I'll just opt for cremation so my family won't have to worry about it!
