Taphophile Tragics

At the cemetery Staglione in Genoa, Italy are endless galeries with graves on both sides. Each grave is decorated with sculptures.

It is almost like walking through a museum.

During the centuries the sculptures are covered with dust, because the galeries are open to the air. I got the feeling to remove the dust but that is not possible anymore, it has gone into the stone.

The scenes are all very dramatic, families grieving for their lost ones.

This is my contribution to Taphophile Tragics

  1. Your photos of the galleries turned out beautifully (as mine did not - too much contrast with the bright sun)

....I hope people aren't bored with the three of us posting from the same cemetery - at least we are all taking a different approach!

  2. This walkway of art is spellbinding! I am reminded of cloisters, sacred arches, and even old covered university walkways round main quadrangles.

  6. I've never seen photos of this before ... some of the monuments are quite beautiful and I'm sure would have been very expensive.

  7. Yes, the cloistered look moves my senses each and every time, and your lead photograph is quite wonderful.

I should think that just to travel down one cloister such as this would be enough for me. I can take museums for about 2 hours, whereas meandering thorugh an open air cemetery I can do for about double that length of time.

I agree that the statues here look to have cost a lot of money, and to be very realistic. It is a shame that the dust in now ingrained in the material from which the statues are carved. But time will do that I guess.

I do not think that three posting on Staglione is too many. It is an eye-opening place.
