Taphophile Tragics Memorial Wall

In the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam is an exhibition "Death Matters", about how people around the world deal with death, saying goodbye, grieve and remember.  In the end there was this Memorial Wall where people could  write a message to a passed love one and hang it on the wall.

It was quite interesting and impressive, in fact we went for another exhibition and watched this one by accident.
Here you can watch a short impression of the exhibition.

This is my contribution to Taphophile Tragics

  1. I find the writing fascinating. It is all in English, or were they just the examples you chose to show us, your audience, who may be largely English speaking.

But the style of writing and what they say, seems very out in the open. I would not want to fill out a form like this, because I would think it bordering on a lack of respect for my departed love. Interesting the differences between the ways people react.

  5. I think I would prefer to keep my correspondence with my dearly departed private... but I also rather liked reading these snippets that other people have left.

  6. Julie, CaT,
I was surprised myself too about the english messages. I had the idea to photograph one and translate it for the blog, but found all these english notes. Apparently many foreigners visit the museum. I myself wouldn't put a message there, it is very public indeed.
