A sculpture named "Mother Earth" made by Hildo Krop (1884-1970) who was Amsterdam City sculptor. It dates from 1926 and is made of limestone. It represents a bent down woman who helds a figure on her lap. She is surrounded by a capricorn, a bird of prey and a serpent. In 1958 the city council hired the sculpture for an exhibition in this public garden. They liked it so much they bought it later on and it is still there.The limestone is very soft and you can see the damage by the elements since then. I am a great admirer of his works and have published about him before on my blog here.
You really are a Hildo Krop fan Marrianne, and he is certainly well represented around Amsterdam. Was very interesting to see his other works. You're right about the limestone it definitely isn't as hard wearing as other sculpting materials.
