Amsterdam view

A nice view at the hoists on the houses in Amsterdam. Because Amsterdam houses have narrow steps, the furnitures have to get hoisted up on the outside by a rope and a wheel. Since ages houses are built with a hoist here, but times are changing. The modern furniture removers use outside elevators now and the hoists are not the norm anymore at new houses.

  1. Sure must be difficult to hoist up a piano to put through the window!Nice picture. I see all of the braces lined up on top.

  2. I never knew of such a thing. I suppose someone could use it to sneak in or out at night without their spouse knowing?

  3. Wow, interesting shot Marianne, so many different styles of balcony also. The one thing that is uniform are the ornate street lights. Must me fun to watch and see some of the bigger items going up.

  4. Before I read what you had written under your picture, I was thinking of my trip and watching them hoist the furniture up to the top. It was a fascinating operation to watch. I like the old way of doing it. A wonderful shot. genie

  5. Oh, interesting!
I wonder too whether they use exterior elevators because they can't be sure the hoist will hold?
They make for an interesting texture to the photo!
