Facade decorations

The famous canal houses in Amsterdam date from the 17th century,  the so called "Golden Century". Amsterdam developed into an international commercial metropolis that surpassed most other European cities in wealth, power and population. It attracted people from all over the world, most from Europe but a smaller number came from much further afield: from the Netherlands' trading posts in North America, Brazil, West-Africa and around the Indian Ocean. The city's international character was decisive in propelling Amsterdam to prosperity.

Beautiful houses were built and decorated with many beautiful ornaments. In winter I am always surprised to have such a great look at them when the trees are leafless.

The archangel Michael kills the dragon. He is standing on a console in the shape of the head of an elephant who's trunk ends in a hanging festoon.

I hope you enjoyed the little canal tour.

  6. Very fancy! It's surprising that they put so much sculpture into dwelling and that they have lasted for 300 years.

  8. They are wonderful old houses with a distinctive look. Typical Amsterdam. It is true you can get a good look at them without the leaves on the trees.
