Many people use a bike in Amsterdam and so do the tourists. You can recognize them at the coloured bikes with a rent sign in front and the wobbly way they try to find their way. I think many of them have never been biking before and certainly not in a traffic situation in a city. This a rather quiet place, but I have seen them struggling in far more crowded streets with cars which was very scary to look at. But I haven't heard yet about deadly accidents with tourists.
All those bikes are put on the streets which is becoming a growing problem. There are bicycle gagares but Amsterdam people prefer to put them in front of their home or the place they have to be. To walk in Amsterdam can be sometimes difficult making slaloms over the sidewalks.
This is a bicycle garage at a railway station.
I have never seen so many bikes in one spot before. That's amazing.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHa, like the parking garages we have here uptown, but filled with cars - WOW - I had mentioned earlier that I was amazed to see so many bikes in another post, but this is like the best photo of the day award - really cool :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI remember finding it challenging riding on the cobbled, or bricked, streets!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHow on earth do people get their bikes out of this mess - or even find their own?!
Bicycles may cause a problem but compared to cars it's nothing. Cycling for more than pleasure is just starting to appear here.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat is interesting and funny too. "Red bike, tourist, watch out!" I never considered a problem with so many bicycles. My problem would be finding where I parked my bike. Heck, I have that problem with my car.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe only place I have seen something similar is in Denmark.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGuess there is no other country in the world with more bikes than The Netherlands! It does become a problem for stalling them properly and out of the way for pedestrians.
Hugs,
Mariette
Een typisch beeld van Nederlandse steden, vol fietsen.

Het blijft een dankbaar foto object.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHow do the owners ever find their bikes in a crowd such as this? I enjoy biking but would be wobbling dangerously in traffic!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenwow. That would annoy me, to see so many bikes in an area. It's a visual clutter!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWow, that is an impressive scene in the last image, pedal power obviously rules.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAll I can say is OMG! I have heard the Amsterdam is the cycling capital of the world and I can see that it is soooo true Marianne!
BeantwoordenVerwijdereni like it! (but not the tourists on bikes, haha). in boston there were signs everywhere that you were not allowed to put your bike there. so annoying!! :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAmsterdam is one of our favorite cities (since we enjoy biking)! Love seeing your images.
