Celebration

Last week I celebrated my birthday in a traditional dutch way with some family and friends sitting in a circle and eating cake with coffee or tea. We are used to this but I once read that for foreigners it seems a bit strange and dull to sit still and talk with each other and not have a party.

Here an impression of the cake and chocolate I had bought for my guests.
And now you all want to know how old I am, well let's say this, you can read my age now normal as well upside down and choose the one you prefer. And yes I am the one at the left.

  1. Oh, what a delightful array of goodies. Had I been at your party, I probably would have been quite silent because I couldn't eat and talk at the same time. I think that there are many different ways to celebrate. I very much like your way of celebrating. Our family gets quite noisy with conversations going on all over the house. Then after we have our birthday dinner, the cake appears and well all sing to celebrate the occasion.

  2. Ooh Marianne, I love your sense of humour. First, let me wish you a Belated Birthday Wish. We often have friends over to sit and chat and have tea/coffee and cake, pie or cookies - I love those afternoons. Your assortment of cakes and chocolates look just YUMMY. Have a wonderful day.

  5. Ja typisch Nederlands maar wel zo gezellig toch. Ik heb me er altijd tegen verzet en heb het ook nooit zo gevierd. Familie en vrienden komen tegenwoordig voor een etentje en dat is ook gezellig.fijne zondag nog.

  6. Hmm...last week was a birthday for me too. I'd like the day to come and go with no notice for the most part. So your little gathering would be about as most as I could tolerate. As it was, just my wife and I. A coffee shop in the morning, a tea shop midday and rustic little bar-b-que eatery that evening. It was a good day. You've got one year on me. Until next year at this time when we have to go through it all over again, have a good year.

  7. Happy Birthday! looks like a lovely celebration. I noticed a difference in birthday celebrations when. I lived there. Here..people...friends or relatives buy or make the cake for you. There, we learned that the birthday celebrant was to furnish the cake. I love learning about different customs.

  9. Dearest Marianne,
    Happy belated Birthday to you!
Oh my; that typical Dutch tradition of serving coffee and/or tea with some great pastry (the French way I would say) I missed here for 30 years... Birthdays are not celebrated like that over here. And if they present cake it is served without coffee or tea. A weird feeling as we naturally are so set for taking it like that! But you're lucky for having this selection of bon-bons and pâtisserie available to you within The Netherlands! Here you have to make your own or go shop in the big cities where it is more cosmopolitan, like at Whole Foods.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

PS Who is that guy in the center of the picture with that Javanese head covering?

  12. A belated happy birthday to you. To me this seems like a perfectly normal and nice way to celebrate a birthday. The cake and chocolates look delicious.

I got a little laugh from this photo because it looks like the man in the middle has a lampshade on his head, here it's an old fashioned way of referring to someone who was very drunk at a party or celebration. e.g."The last time I saw him a party he was wearing a lampshade on his head." :-)

    1. My poor borther in law, first someone calls him an Asian sawa worker and now you call him an alcoholic. I am afraid he will never visit me anymore.....

  14. Happy belated birthday Marianne. I think the idea of sitting eating cake and chatting with friends sounds like an excellent idea. In fact the older I get the less I like to have a birthday party :)
