Landscape Art

Balancing on the interface between land and water, a 25-metre tall squatting man looks out over the Markerlake from the city of Lelystad. In the open landscape this human figure is a landmark in the Flevopolder. With "Exposure", the British artist Antony Gormley (1950) made the sixth Land Art Project in Flevoland since the start of it in 1977.

The sculpture is made out of 1.8000 unique steel bars with a total weight of 44.000 kg and was placed her in 2010.

It is quite impressive to walk between his feet and have a look up.

At a foggy day like yesterday he seems to fade away.
As with  many sculptures people make up their own name for it and this one is called the "Poepende Man"  (defecating Man) which is an appropiate nickname I think.

  1. I am just imagining how fast that would come down in one of our ice storms. We have many towers used in air waves, etc that have come tumbling down in an ice storm. This is very interesting but definitely something I would not build. I rather agree with the nickname.

  2. Sort of like Rodin's TheThinker, which my father fondly referred to as The Man on the Pot. I now have a lovely poster of The Thinker in my small downstairs bathroom.

  3. The name given to him was my first thought when I saw him on SC's blog but thought best to keep my thoughts to myself. Now I don't feel bad since others saw the same. Pieces of art on that scale I've seen are welded. This is even more impressive having been built like with a child's Erector Set.

  5. Very typical Gormley sculpture. I like his work especially the pieces out in the environment for everyone to see. Great name for this one.

  14. There are many pieces of Anthony Gormley around the country now including Edinburgh - I do like him. This is a variation on a theme from him that I've never seen before. It looks brilliant.
