Fong Leng

Fashion designer and artist Fong Leng is "la grande dame" in the fashion circuit of the 70s and 80s of the twentieth century. With her quirky creations and dazzling fashion shows she acquires fame in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam Museum shows her designs in the exhibition Fong Leng-Fashion & Art.

Characteristic for the design of Fong Leng is the combination of different materials such as leather and silk. Additionally they fit handicraft techniques like applique and pleating.

Stricktly speaking its not couture creations, but Fong Leng calls them artwork itsself.

The exhibition also presents recent work from her private collection as this tapestry.

This is the designer herself with a famous lover of her fashion "Mathilde Willink", the wife of painter Carel Willink. In the colourful 70s she is a striking presence in the streets of Amsterdam and I remember she even went shopping dressed in these creations.
If you want to see more have a look at the website and watch the crazy video of a fashion show in 1983 in a football stadium with 20.000 visitors and heavy rains.
