Bags and Purses

In the "Tassenmuseum Hendrikje" (Museum of Bags and Purses) ) in Amsterdam, I saw this beautiful old dressing case containing all the accessories you needed at that time as silver brushes and crystal vials.

The exhibition "Welcome on board" showes the way people used to travel by coach and ship with gigantic trunks as this one you could hang your clothes in.

  3. Probably back in the days when they had porters to carry them--the trunks, I mean. Sheesh! Can you imagine dropping one of these on the scales and claiming them as "carry-on"? :-)

  6. Traveling at that time required a great deal of baggage in the truest sense of the word. I think I prefer "traveling light!"

  7. This sounds like a fascinating exhibit. I do wonder what was in all those pots and vials, what beauty products were available to women of that day.

  9. Dearest Marianne,
    To see a complete collection of such silver and crystal toilettries in a case is rare! We have seen several of those items at Replacements Ltd. in North Carolina, the biggest seller of antique and outdated silver, crystal and china. In one of my blogposts you can see those items:{1899 Roses & Cupid - A Dream in Silver}
    Hugs,
    Mariette
