Grand Hotel Esplanade

The historical Grand Hotel Esplanade was once a central meeting point for the Berlin society before 90% of it was destroyed during the Second World War.

The entire facade and and remaining rooms of the Esplanade were restored to their original grandeur to serve as an architectural museum. Construction works at the Potzdammer Platz because of zoning plans, the whole project had to be moved and the facade is now displayed behind a protective glass wall.

  2. Nice they were able to preserve some history, even if it had to be moved. It's so beautifully ornate.

  3. What a beautiful structure. So sad to have lost a great deal of this magnificence but when restored to its natural beauty, it is amazing through the protective glass. When I saw the first photo, I thought all these people on the other side were staying at the "Hotel", until I read the rest of your post. Most interesting :)

  4. Dearest Marianne,
In a way it is sad that it is inside a display case as its architecture was so beautiful!
Wars have destroyed many a treasure on great architecture...

  9. It's great that they rebuilt such and elegant building after it had been destroyed. We need some of that mindset here.

  10. I like this new way: protecting old architecture by glass . So we can see old parts of buildings without disturbing them. Postdamer Platz is so rich in history!

  11. So many wonderful buildings destroyed during the war.. I wonder if it hadn't been destroyed if it would still be used as a hotel Marianne?
