Monday Mural

Behind a palisade I found this huge image in Kilkenny,  Ireland. I googled the name Mick Minogue and found quite a story about the woman.
Dame Alice Kyteler (1280-1325) was a woman who was the earliest person accused and condemened for witchcraft in Ireland. Having being accused of attempted murder, her servant Petronella de Meath was arrested and tortured until she admitted that Alice used witch craft to gain wealth and power. Petronella became the first woman in Ireland to be flogged and burned at the stake on November 3rd, 1324. Any of Alices followers met the same faith soon after and a witch hunt began. Dame Alice fled the country using a secret underground tunnel which some believe is still below the medieval city.

  1. Rather ghostly and hard to spot- I like it though.

  3. Yes, the witch hunt was so awful, those poor women and so many died horrible deaths. I am glad Dame Alice got away and that the talented Mick Minogue brought this all to light with a painting on an otherwise dreary wall. Now I have to go read more about this and the painter. Thank you.

  6. Fascinating story. The mural on the wall is intriguing, and so awful to think of being flogged and burned at the stake! I wonder what they did to make folks think they were witches??

  7. Neat mural, sad story. I thought first it was an image of the old magician's trick. I'll just continue on thinking that.

  8. That is certainly an interesting story. And one of the most interesting murals I've seen as well! Probably just about anything could have been seen as "witchcraft" back in the old days.

  9. It's hard to believe these things happened at one time.

  12. Dearest Marianne,
Wow, you unearthed quite a story with this mural. Good that the artist left his signature in clear writing so you could find out about Dame Alice Kyteler, having been accused of murder and the rest of the haunting story.
Great work and it seems to be even larger than one would presume from your photo above.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  13. Thanks for the research on such an unusual mural. Amazing how a group of people can be swayed to do such horrendous things.

  14. That's quite a story and it makes the image more powerful. But since Dame Alice escaped, maybe this is Petronella. Either way, a compelling image. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
