Good Fences

A crute iron stairway in Hotel Arena in Amsterdam. During Open Monuments Day I visited this former Roman Catholic St. Elisabeth Institute, a nursing home for terminally ill, built in 1890.

It was the first nursing home in Amsterdam that had a combination of the ward-based system, with wards on either side of the hallway, and the new pavillion system that had separate rooms with large windows. It is now a design hotel which looks very nice to stay in for a visit to Amsterdam.

  8. Dearest Marianne,
That is the best looking nursing home I've ever seen; great architecture for that era!
As a hotel it looks even luxurious.
