These ships in our harbour are waiting for wind. This weekend we have the annual Harbour days in Almere which always starts with a "Botter Race", a sailing competition between these special ships with brown sails on the Gooi lake.
The Botter is an old Dutch type vessel build flat to slightly V-shaped. The "Botters" fished mainly on the former Zuidersea, but were also used for inshore fishing in the North Sea. The type originated in the 2nd half of the 18th century.
