Most bridges in Amsterdam have a name but this one caught my eye. The "Bully Lock" is a bridge with a lock beneath the road surface which connects the water of two canals.
The name "Bully" comes from a longtime mythe circling in Amsterdam as a true story. Bully was a waterghost who would cease between the bridge and the lock and was lying in wait to withdraw not alert passersby, mostly children, into the canal.
So watch out when passing this bridge!
Linking signs, signs
I imagine that take kept a few children awake at night! I like the old bike and sign in your photo.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenKlinkt wel een beetje onvriendelijk.

That's about as spooky as ghosts under the beds to cause nightmares. Thanks for sharing!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA little too scary for me!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA curious folk tale. I like the shot!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenOo, sort of sounds like Billy Goats Gruff. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAncient stories are interesting and I always wonder about their origin. Where did they start from?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA scary Halloween story.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenEen opvallend naambord. En wat een leuk verhaal erbij.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a name: Bullebaks-sluis! Indeed a real Bully in that story and who knows about the origin of that myth? Did you know by the way that in English we too use the (almost) Dutch word Sluice? You can read more here: Sluice
Hugs,
Mariette
I noticed the word in translation, but didn't know it was the right word for this, I went for safe. Thanks for the addition!
VerwijderenThanks for explaining this, I would have been clueless. Tom The Backroads Traveller
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt's like the monster under your bed waiting to grab you! Scary.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWonderful ghost story!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenVery interesting...
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNow that's a darn good story to tell the children who are out on Halloween. Beware of the Bully Lock - Most kids tell stories of walks through graveyards on Halloween - I like yours better.
BeantwoordenVerwijderennever heard that story or saw that bridge!!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenhow interesting.
