West Tower

Last Saturday we had a summerly autumn day with a bright blue sky. The tower of the Westerchurch in Amsterdam was seen above the houses in all its beauty. It is the highest church tower in Amsterdam (87 meters). The top with the imperial crown dates from 1637 and includes bells and a carillon. The hull of the tower is made of brick, the superstructure is made up of three, decreasing in size floors. The first part is of sandstone, the two upper parts are made of wood, covered with painted lead.

  6. It is beautiful! If ascending into the tower is allowed, I would imagine my father made the climb.

  7. Interesting that there is color on an older brick building. It makes me take a careful look at it.

  9. Dearest Marianne,
What a beautiful photo against the blue sky and flanked by golden fall leaves!
I had to look up the fact that the Austrian Imperial crown at the top of the Westerkerk Tower comes from the shield of Amsterdam – it has been added to it by Maximilian I in 1489.
The spire with the Imperial Crown is of 1638. In 1489, Maximilian I, who was crowned Emperor in 1508, gave the city of Amsterdam the right to use the Crown in her coat of arms, as a thank you for the support that the city showed him during the Hoekse and Kabeljauwse quarrels.
Lovely piece of history; thank you!
    Hugs,
    Mariette
