Since a few years we have a lightfestival in Amsterdam during the dark winterweeks. I have posted about the objects in previous years here. Every year artists are invited to express themselves with light. This one is called "178 Bottles, 1 Message", made by Saskia Hoogendoorn & Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands. It represents the 178 nationalities of the 800.000 inhabitants of Amsterdam. All those people are the beating heart of the city. The bottles have ledlights which are controlled by passing public.
The lightbridge made by designer collective Tjep, is an ode to the famous Amsterdam bow bridges which are in winter always illuminated.
The Gatekeepers at the entrance of the Hermitage Museum by Irma de Vries. "The standing guards ensure that the philosophy of the seventeenth century is not lost".
Another time I show you more of the "Illuminade walk".

I don't know who coined the phrase "painting with light", but that's what comes to mind when I see these displays.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA great time of the year for a Light Festival. I think I remember you posting photos of the festival last year which I also thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks for sharing.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe lights are different and unusual - very attractive

BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat a great way to lighten up a season. Love the top "heartfelt" display.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI've seen the bridge on SCollection's blog already, but I won't complain : it is such an awesome enlightment for the bridge... The two gatekeeper look like ghost from the past in their light costume, very impressive.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe heart is pretty neat.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI don't know which of these I like the most. Beautifully rendered!

BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThose 178 bottles of Led-lights that represent the 178 nationalities in Amsterdam is the most symbolic I guess!
Amsterdam is often called the least Dutch city because of so many foreigners making up its population. But it is a beautiful city with so much art in many forms. Thanks for handing it to us; worldwide via your great photos!
Hugs,
Mariette

I have to say the 178 heart shaped lighted bottles are the nearest to my heart. What a lovely tribute to the nationalities that thrive in Amsterdam and what a wonderful idea. All the displays are truly beautiful, and what a lot of work for these beauties. Thank you dearest Marianne for all the beauty you have brought to us virtually so far this year.
