Bommel Monument

The Marten Toonder monument in Rotterdam. "Marten Toonder" (1912-2005) was a Dutch comic creator, born in Rotterdam. He was probably the most succesful comic artist in the Netherlands and had a great influence in the Dutch language by introducing new words and expressions. His most famous comic figure was "Oliver B. Bommel" and his assistent "Tom Poes"( Tom the cat). At the top you can see Tom and the plaid jacket of Bommel.

There are several creations from his comics realized on the bottom of the monument, but I notice now I have a new creation in front of my photo, a smoking lady!

  6. This is one that requires a good look. I like figures that you have to look at carefully.

  7. Dearest Marianne,
Indeed, how popular Tom Cat and Oliver B. Bommel were and probably still are! Great monument.

  9. Smoking is an ugly, dirty and unhealthy habit so I am more interested in the comic background.
