Chairs

Some quotes on the wall at the exhibition "Van stoelen bezeten" (Obsessed with chairs) in the "Gorcums Museum".

Here some examples of the exhibit.

This one I liked very much, you can change the back to get a lazy seat. It was made in 1908 by Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956), an Austrian architect and designer and fellow founder of the "Wiener Werkstatte". He called it a "Sitting Machine"!

I preferred the old chairs like this one from the thirties, made by Marcel Breuer (1901-1981), a Hongarian/ American architect who fled for the Nazis to London.

I shouldn't know how to get in or out this modern wobbly one.

  2. Wow, I like the one you like too - I remember my Auntie had one almost like that and she had a blanket on it and she would have a snooze laying there. Some of those others look very "Outta Space" and not so comfortable. Some look like shaped, hardened rugs. ha,ha Very interesting post.

  4. That's quite and exhibit. I'm a bit fussy about a chair, as I like to be able to put my feet on the floor, and many of the chairs have too long a seat! (I'm a little short).

  5. Some of those chairs it appears there is just only one way to sit in them. I like my chair so that I can squirm about. I have to you see for I have a cat that insists on taking up more than his share of the chair.

  6. Some of them might require a "now how do I sit on that" line of thought!

  9. Interesting chairs! I would have trouble getting out of most of them. The one in the third picture in the back is my favorite.

  10. Dearest Marianne,
It is so true those quotes about a good chair! We got good chairs here at home and I love my Herman Miller desk chair. Even if I have back problems, like last week, this chair is the BEST. We got great chairs from Oisterwijk, at that time they were called Senior chairs, a one-seat and 3-seat and they were higher than usual and with great back support. Most sofas here in the US are way too deep, and also the distance to the back is way too far... Not good for the back!
Glad we got our leather living room set, which also seats great for reading etc.
That last one... would love to see a video of several ages from child to elderly, getting in and attempting to get out!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Yes, Oisterwijk was well known for its furniture, don't know if the firm still excists. There are more chairs for seniors now as there are more seniors everywhere who want to sit comfortable.

    2. Oisterwijk ceased to exist on November 16, 2011... Guess they lost the battle against IKEA. For a comfy chair, it also has a lot to do with leg length but one can be blessed for having it covered without causing back problems.

  11. I had to laugh at the shape of the chair in the top photo. Wouldn't it be fun to have a video of someone trying out all the different styles?
