Queen Wilhelmina

An equestrial statue of Queen Wilhelmina (1880-1962) made by Theresia van der Pant. Two years after the death of the old queen, the Womans Organization of Amsterdam invited the sculptress to make a statue. It was intended she should make an image of the queen sitting behind a desk having a speech to the people as she did during WWII from her exile place London.

The sculptress however didn't like that idea at all and choose for a young Wilhelmina riding a horse. Her daughter queen Juliana helped the sculptress to choose the right clothes for the statue.

  1. Why not? And I like that she's not dressed in full military regalia like most such monuments of men. :-)

  3. Oh I like it. Not nearly as stuffy as a Queen behind a desk!

  6. I like the artist's idea as it shows action of both horse and rider. She was a doer and a woman of action.

  9. Those artists are pretty independent people. My brother always has his own impressions of how things should be, and has walked away from contracts because of not agreeing with the sponsors.

  11. I have noticed on many blogs from overseas, that more and more statues are placed at ground level, not on the pedestals. And the idea I like.
Because the larger monuments, the bigger bully on their faces.
    Best wishes :)
I wish you a wonderful New Year !!!
