Delftware

A window display packed with the typical Dutch Delftware, or Delft pottery. It denotes blue and white pottery made in and around the city Delft and the tin-glazed pottery made in the Netherlands from the 16th century.

Delftware in the latter sense is a type of pottery in which a white glaze is applied, usually decorated with metal oxides. Delftware includes pottery objects of all descriptions  such as plates, ornaments and tiles. You like it or you don't, I am not mad about it, but it is a kind of Dutch heritage. Tourists however like it very much and mostly buy something. You can read more about the history here.

And specially for my friend Janey of  Thick and Thin (air) a detail of a pancake plate.

  1. I find the color quite attractive and I can well imagine someone doing something un-traditional with it.

  2. My Mum had a dish set like this. It was the only thing rescued from our burning house when I was a small child. The set had been brought over with my Grandparents when they settled in Canada. They were from Rotterdam. I always loved these dishes and still have a few in my home. The rest are scattered in my family. Knowing that these dishes were special and every Sunday, Mum would serve up the big dinner with lovely dishes -

  6. They really are unique, and now we seen them often in antique shops. I prefer the darker, flow blue plates. Not sure where they come from. The designs are very unique.

  8. Ahhh thanks for the mention. I do like Delft pieces. I collected quite a few of those little blue houses too.KLM (your Dutch Airline) gave them away years ago on their flights. Since we were Americans living in Holland...we flew back and forth a lot.

  13. Dearest Marianne,
There is a lot of Delftware out for sale but the high quality authentic Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles 1653 stands out. So does the even older Koninklijke Tichelaar from Makkum 1641.
Delft Polychrome is pretty too but only the real thing!
We do have the complete set of Royal Dutch Airline Delft blue Canalhouses from each new KLM Birthday in October. This past October house # 95 got added.
    Hugs,

    2. Dearest Marianne,
Sorry, we earned them. Never flew business as such but we mosttimes got an upgrade with our Royal Wing Card. That's a card only the very frequent flyers received. With all our international consulting I have been 1,500,000 miles in the air and Pieter even more than that as he flew a lot for Campbell's Soup prior to our consulting. KLM was the first airline to be in the sky so they created a house for each year. This October they will be in existence for 96 years and yes, the last couple of years I have been buying them via Marktplaats.nl.
We literally 'lived' for months on end up in the sky!
      Hugs,
      Mariette
