In the center of Amsterdam a big building is demolished in favor of another one. This used to be an expensive bank building covered with pink marble. With the crisis in the bankworld nobody wanted to take it over and as this place is a hotspot in Amsterdam it has to make room for a new building.
It was interesting to see how the building was "eaten" by a kind of hungry dinosaur with a lot of noise. It took the attention of many people who were watching the capital building going down with malicious pleasure.
Snap, snap.
In the evening the graffiti painters seem to climb in the ruin to make their point.
The new building will house two new flagship stores, one of them will be Marks & Spencer.

You got nice and close to the demolition. I always wonder why these buildings have to be demolished.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA common sight here. It's the rare building that gets heritage recognition.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt amazes me how a building can be taken down right beside traffic, moving crowds and some might not even notice. Nice shots of the dinosaur - these are really great. I like Marks & Spencer. Used to shop there all the time when I lived in London.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI can almost hear the noise! I really don't like graffiti. Seems these folks were wasting the paint. Here today...gone tomorrow!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSad to see them come down, but good to see new ones as well. I think it is interesting when there are blasts to make the buildings implode...happens a lot for those big buildings, and is quick to get them to the ground.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA nice place for the graffiti painters to practice their future vandalism. I hope the pink marble was saved to be used elsewhere.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI hope they will be reusing the marble.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGecontroleerd geweld. Slopen is een vak.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt's sad that they take down buildings that are in good shape.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe machine is really looking like a beast eating the building !
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHet afbreken is meestal spectaculairder dan opbouwen.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGroetjes,
Filip
I remember a similar building being demolished here last summer. I thought too late of documenting the process.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt really almost looks alive in that third picture! I hope they reuse the marble too.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenYour writing is excellent and one wonders at time WHY so much needs to get demolished; such a waste of capital! And one cringes by the thoughts of pink marble being destroyed...
Hugs,
Mariette
It is sad to see buildings being eaten.
