The facades of the historical houses in Amsterdam were often decorated with all kind of decorations mostly related to the profession of the owner of the house. This building dating from the 18th century housed a porcelain worker. The sign says in old dutch "De Porceleyne Blompot" which means "The porcelain cachet pot". The decoration is still there but the porcelain shop has gone."Barney's Uptown" is a bar and restaurant, but maybe he uses porcelain dishes.....
Linking to Signs, signs
I always appreciate the historical facts that you include with your photos. I noticed that the curtains on the second floor are lined up perfectly whereas the ones on the floor above are not. Must be different tenants!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI am surprised to see English signs in Amsterdam.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLove this, Marianne....the owner definitely needs to be using porcelain dishes in keeping with the tradition of the facade.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis shot looks excellent enlarged Marianne, so many lovely details on this old building.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenVery fancy.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe detail work is quite beautiful!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenLovely old building. I am happy the old sign is still there.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThose façades are so beautiful !and I like to see the curtains behind the window.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhat beautiful trim around the window. Tom The Backroads Traveller
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI didn't know that fact about the decorations on the buildings. How interesting.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHow lovely and ornate. Interesting that the modern sign is in English.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenJa geweldig. En ook 'mooie' gordijntjes ;)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBeautiful, sculpted decoration round the window. Interesting that just one window was chosen and no hint of decoration round the others.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt is absolutely gorgeous! I'm so glad they left it intact.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marian,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenQuite interesting to see that old sign for the Porcelain Cachet Pots still on the wall! Flower pots are mainly those clay pots and for sure they created the hand painted porcelain Cachet Pots (derived from French) which are still around in antiques.
Love the old craftsmanship of making such beautiful embellishments!
Hugs,
Mariette
At least they did save the historic bit! I'd probably try the bar too... love the look from the outside.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWe moeten meer naar boven kijken als we in de winkelstraten lopen, er is daar veel moois te zien.
