Girl and horse

The bridges in the south part of Amsterdam where I grew up are decorated with beautiful sculptures made by "Hildo Krop" (1884-1970). He was from 1916 until his death city sculptor of Amsterdam. This girl with prancing horse represents the open-mindendness of people towards life.

Documentary filmmaker Hedda van Gennep was the model for this sculpture when she was three years old. She can't remember it but her mother told her, her parents were friends of the sculptor and probably he made some drawings of her when they visited him. In an interview in a newspaper in 2010 she said "Always when I cycle along this sculpture, and that is very often, I think "That is me", which I find very funny".

Look how this wooden bench is intergrated into the bridge on the foot of the sculpture.

  1. WOW - impressive horse and small girl. I love how the wooden bench integrates into the bridge - massive and beautiful. Love the background behind the column and bench.

  3. I love his style, and what an honour for Hedda van Gennep to be forever immortalised on the bridge as a young child.

  4. Fab perspective in the first shot Marianne, it would be a little strange to pass by a statue of oneself each day :)

  5. Growing up, I knew many a young girl who loved horses. That is the message I get from the sculpture.

  6. City sculpture? Now that's a great position for a city to have.

  7. At first I did not see the child, and wondered. . .horse? child? It is quite remarkable to be a model for a sculpture of such stature! The week-end edition of the Wall Street Journal had an article about Amsterdam, Stepping Out in Amsterdam" with some lovely photos. Check it out; I bet google has it.
