Open Monuments Day

One of the nicest events I think is the anual Open Monuments Day. In Amsterdam we visited an unusual building in the street where we once lived.

High above the street are two giant green gnomes. The right one holds a small red ball, which the left one seems to want to catch when it is thrown. The left one I couldn't see because it is hidden behind the leaves of the tree. The creator of these metres tall wooden statues is unknown, as is their meaning.

This also applies to the white children's figures,

and the green eagles and the other carvings on this variegated facade. Back in 1884, architect A. Boerma clearly intended to give his residential building on the recentlty constructed Ceintuurbaan as extravagant an appearance as possible.

One resident had opened her house for the public this day, so we had a look at the back side which was rather disappointing in comparison with the front side.

But the balcony was rather pretty.

  1. It is our heritage weekend here too - love the figures on the building especially that green gnome.

  2. That is an interesting concept. Here in Perth we have Open House weekend which will be the first weekend of November, where the public can visit behind the scenes at Museums, etc and some people open their homes too if unusual. I like that first building and all the little and big statues.

  6. I've no doubt said it before, but the concept reminds me of Doors Open. That first building really is eye catching!

  9. I like the buildning in this sreet. And the green gnomes is wonderful, It's a pity only that they are so high and hidden behind trees. No one sees them (except for sharp-eyed photographer as you)
