One of the unusual locations of the "Unseen Photo Festival" a few weeks ago was this former Prinsengracht hospital situated at an Amsterdam canal.
It was a rather big building I had never visited before.
Inside it looked you entered a still operational hospital.
But when looking outside it was rather in decay. The hospital dated from 1854 and was originally intended for the wealthy citizins. In 1994 it was linked to another big hospital in Amsterdam.
The empty rooms had exhibitions with some photo's, which could not captivate me. I only could think of how many beds with patients here had been.
And how fortunate you must have been to have a bed at the windowside with a view over the canalhouses to forget your misery of being ill.
A look from the window.
The stairwell.
One room had still the striped awnings down.
It is not yet clear what is going to happen with the property. Keep our fingers crossed for not again a five star hotel.

Magnificas fotografias gostei da fachada do Hospital.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenUm abraço e continuação de uma boa semana.
If I was feeling the least bit woozy, a look down that stairwell alone would finish me. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThis must be a prime piece of property. The view from the window is fantastic. Thanks for the tour!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt must have felt a bit odd being in that big empty building Marianne :) I wonder if it will be turned into residential apartments? Super location!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe inside does look like an old hospital with big bedrooms. Those photos look a bit lost in that big bedroom!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe view from the windows is fabulous.
No doubt it will be converted to very expensive apartments.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBijzonder hoe je dan daarbinnen de sfeer van vroeger aanvoelt.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt' interesting to see how hospitals were built at one time. The multi story must have been a problem but we are still building multi story hospitals.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt looks in very nice shape for a building in decay.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGhosts of the past. Perhaps a library?
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThank goodness the days of wards are gone and everyone gets at least a semi private room to be sick in. It is interesting that it is on public view while it is being decided what to do with it.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn looks rather abandoned . Hopefully it will be put to good use. I rather like five star hotels.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI think the condition of the old hospital is amazingly good. The inside looks clean and the green paint nice and bright. Loved the red and white striped awnings, and the rooms overlooking the canal...what a treat for someone sick. I really enjoyed this post. I, too, hope NOT another 5 star hotel.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt does seem to still be in reasonable condition. It will be interesting to see what becomes of it. The awnings remind me of the ones on the historic old Florida Capitol here in Tallahassee.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBeautiful building. But perhaps the spaces was too old-fashioned as hospital.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHopefully, here will some day be something nice for all the townspeople, but not allowed to fall into decay.
I hope it turns into something for the whole community to enjoy.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIn my kitchen I have a Dutch serviette holder.... looking like the image with the houses :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI like the way you photographed the last too images too.
Happy weekend to you!
