To mark the 25th anniversary of the City of Almere in 2009, the Province of Flevoland offered the city a piece of art, In early 2011 the people of Almere chose local artist "Siemen Bolhuys" to create the artwork. It is a bronze statue of 4 meters long and 2,60 meters high with a hand lifting a stylized ship. It depicts the history of Almere and the Zuiderzee, (Southern Sea). "The ship is a symbol of the city of Almere, which is supported by the people, says the artist.
The deeper symbolism of the image reveals itself when people themselves lie down in the hand under the ship and expierence the feeling of security. The name of the artwork is in dutch "Voortvarend", a bit difficult to translate in english as it has a double meaning, "sailing" and "expeditious".
I really like it Marianne. I wonder how many people have posed beside or inside this sculpture, it looks very interactive :)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI like this a lot!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDe hand lijkt echt uit de straat omhoog te komen. Mooi.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI am imagining myself lying down in the grasp of the hand and how it would feel. For me sculptures must be touched.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenReminds me of the ships the Pilgrims used to arrive at Plymouth.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenInteresting piece of artwork. I like it.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe sculpted fingers and nails are so real looking I feel like they are about to come off my computer screen. This is a most impressive sculpture. Just the right size and beautifullly executed.
