Swimming pool

On a walk in Amsterdam I passed this old swimming pool the "Zuiderbad". I hadn't seen this building for a long time and saw it dates from more then 100 years ago. At the age of about eight years old I went every week to this pool with my schoolclass to learn to swim. We went were transported from school with a special "schoolbus" to the pool as it was to far to walk. Every child in the Netherlands has to learn to swim  because we live in a water country.

I saw this old  picture of the inside on the facade,  apparently to celebrate the 100th year existance of the pool. I remember there was a waterfall in the pool where you could sit behind, it is the round arcade at the back.

And a photo of the current situation with disco lights?

  4. How nice that it was a school sponsored class. I was dropped off at the city outdoor pool every morning for a week in June when I was six years old. I remember the water being so cold. This is a beautiful pool. I a m going to see if I can find a pic of our old city pool .......That would make me a copycat.

  6. What a beautiful old building. I love that there is a pool inside. When I was in college, I took a swimming class at an indoor pool located inside an old brick building like that. Unfortunately, they renovated the building and took out the pool.

  8. How fantastic that this gorgeous old building has been renovated inside Marianne. It's the same here, children learn how to swim before they can walk!

  10. Your city and school had it right; every child should learn how to swim, regardless of where they live!
