A history

In 1482 here used to be a tower "Swych Utrecht" that was part of a medieval city wall defence complex in Amsterdam along the river Amstel.  In 1882 the tower was demolished to make way for the "Doelen Hotel".

The gable in the facade of the hotel remembers how the former tower looked like.

Here an old image from internet of the medieval towercomplex.

  2. Sad- the tower would be interesting to look upon today, though I do like the architecture of the present building.

  5. I always find it sad when such old buildings of character have to make way for new developments.

  10. Love the black and white image Marianne, I'm fascinated with 'how things used to be'. How nice that they remember it on the fascade like this!

  12. In its original form, I think it might have made a lovely hotel.
