Living in the Amsterdam School

I visited a magnificent exhibition in the "Stedelijk Museum" in Amsterdam called "Living in the Amsterdam School, designs for the interior 1910-1930".

The Amsterdam School was an exuberant style of architecture and design that was unique in the Netherlands. The movement emerged after the New Art and Art Nouveau schools, and is regarded as the highly original Dutch correlative to the lively international Art Deco movement.

The exhibition showed how the colourful, expressive style functioned within the interior.

The Art Deco decorated utensils.

Stained glass windows.

Those lamps so beautiful.

A poster of an exhibition in the Museum dating from 1923.

In a workplace the visitors could make their own Amsterdam School clock of cardboard.

With these results.

Here you can read more about this movement.

  1. Hier in de buurt staan zelfs een paar electriciteitshuisjes in Amsterdamse School stijl. Krachtig en elegant tegelijk.

  4. I find it intriguing that visitors could sit at a table and make their own project. This is very nice. I really like the stained glass windows and lamp. Beautiful Art Deco.

  5. I do love Art Deco and I can see the influence on these artists. It was very interesting to see the opportunity for adults to create art in a museum. Here all the activities like this are for children only. I've often been tempted to pull up a chair and sit down at the table with them!

  7. People can learn much about their own art if they study somebody else's art. Styles like this are pretty interesting in what they teach and learn.
