Gouda

Last week I visited my sister who lives in the beautiful medieval city of Gouda. Lying at the confluence of the rivers Gouwe and IJssel it got city rights in 1272 and at the end of the Middle Ages Gouda became the fitfth city of Holland. The inner city has a large number of historical and monumental buildings as this Town Hall dating from 1459.

Here a view at the front side and left the St. Jans Church dating from the 15th and 16th centuries but the history of the building goes back further. As you can see it was market day so I couldn't get closer for better photo's.

The entrance of the Town Hall.

And the last historic building at the square is the Waag from 1668 where commodities were weighed to determine the load. From 1920 here only was weighed the famous Gouda Cheese. Nowadays the Cheese and Crafts Museum is housed in the building.
