Small Wonders

In the RijksMuseum in Amsterdam I saw an exhibition of  Dutch micro-carvings from the late Middle Ages.

Detailed Biblical scenes are produced on  such unimagical small scale, you can hardly see them without a magnifier.

A dismantled Prayer Nut. They were all made at the workshop of Adam Dircks from 1500-1530

This three-demensional story is carved from a single piece of wood. It illustrates the life of George, the legendary warrior-saint who liberated the city of Silene from the clutches of the dragon.

  3. I had not heard the story of Saint George and the Dragon until just now when I looked it up. Amazing! No wonder someone carved it.

But...how...how...this must have been done by very patient people with young eyes.
