Charlotte Salomon

This is Charlotte Salomon (1917-1943) an art student from Berlin. In 1938 when she is 22 years old, she fled Nazi Germany to the South of France where her grandparents lived. After the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 her grandmother went mad and jumped out a window. Her grandfather revealed the family's history of mental illness and suicide. It transpired that her mother had also jumped from a window.

In her despair to survive mentally, she decided to undertake something " wildly eccentric" as an alternitive to suicide. In many hundreds of gouaches she recreated her life as a painted play called "Life or Theatre"  After a year she is deported with her husband to Auschwitz and murdered in 1943.

The Jewish Historical Museum has an exhibition  of  800 of her gouaches. You can have a look at her work at their website "here"

  3. There is a sadness running through her work. Some of it reminded me of Van Gogh's work. Thank you for sharing her story and the link.
