Former Orphanage

The courtyard of the Amsterdam Museum.. In the Middle Ages, the Saint Lucien's Monastry was situated here and in 1578 the City Orphanage was established. The Orphanage was home to thousands of children between 1580 and 1960, many of them had lost there parents to the plague.

Here an old picture of the orphans in the courtyard.

And as it is still now.

The orpahns wore all the same clothes in the colours of the Amsterdam Coat of Arms. The children also received an education here. The older boys attended school elsewhere in the city, while the girls received instruction within the orphanage, and were trained in domestic skills.

In memory of the time of the orphanage, the Regents Room has been left intact. Here used for a fashion exhitbition last summer.

And the the orphans cupboards in the inner courtyard.

The corridor to the street.

  3. How fascinating Marianne! The exterior of the building looks completely unchanged since it was built. It seems most appropriate that it is now being used as a museum.

  5. The plight of orphans everywhere in the world has always brings a tear to my eye. I can't begin to imagine how hard things were for these young people. My mother was orphaned for a while before being adopted and it was such a traumatic experience for her that she would never talk about it. Neither my sisters nor I ever learned anything about that period of her life.

  10. The buildings look almost the same. It's amazing that it is still being used now as a museum, that is fantastic. The children that went through the orphanage must have been scared when they arrived.

  12. It was a very different time when many children lost their parents and had no one to take care of them .

  13. So sad for the children who grew up there, away from their families. It's amazing how much it still looks like it did in the past.

  14. Beautiful photo essay. It would be fascinating if a study could be done about what became of the children compared to the rest of the population.

  17. We visited this museum in 2015 and it was for me the best museum where I learned a lot about the city and way of life. Thanks for bringing back good memories Marianne.
