Underground

Amsterdam has opened a new underground. Since 1977 we had a small one with a few stations. In 2003 the construction of a North South connection started. Never such a project has cost so many efforts, money and setbacks. The grounds under Amsterdam are soft that is why houses are built on poles. Digging in this soil was very difficult with a prolapse of some houses as a result.

It was an endless project with many disasters and huge cost overruns.

But last Saturday after 15 years of blood, sweat and tears, was finally the opening of a whole new underground network.

With pretty art on the walls.

  1. The station looks fabulous and love the artwork too.
I can imagine that it wouldn't be easy to build such a project in Holland.

P.s. how amazing that there are so many Rainbow Lorikeets around Amsterdam, I wonder how they cope cold in your much colder winter?

  3. This must have been very costly to build. It certainly is beautiful to look at.

  4. Strictly speaking we don't have an underground system, but the LRT expansion that's scheduled to open up in the fall will be running underneath the core, and as has been the case with your system, its construction process has had its problems.

  5. Now the people can benefit from all that costly work. Projects that big seem to always have their issues and problems and hopefully all those are now behind them.
