On our Monumentstour through we came along the Olympic Stadium. In1928 Amsterdam organized the Olympic Games and the Stadium is fortunately still there. A few years ago some real estate entrepeneurs had stupid plans to demolish the stadium and to built houses here. The Amsterdam people revolted and after lots of troubles won the battle.
Architect Andre van Stigt renovated the stadium and it looks as new now and is still in use for football, atletics and cycle racing.
The tower where the Olympic fire was burning during the games.
We had lunch in the Stadium and had a look through the window at the inside where the finish of a cyclingtour of amateurs took place.

It would have been an architectural crime to have destroyed this building which is a fine example of design from that period in the 1920s/30s.
BeantwoordenVerwijdereneen stadion met beperkte capaciteit, maar ik zou het wel eens willen bezoeken Marianne

BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt was well worth preserving. It does look good.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWonderful that it was saved. I like that tower!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenA grand looking stadium and the people should be proud that their protests killed the ill fated plan for construction of houses.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenNice humane scale. Glad you kept it!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSome very nice looking bikes.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIf they keep renovating these buildings , they are good for a long time.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThank heavens for people power Marianne, otherwise we wouldn't have any heritage buildings left! The stadium looks like it is used well!
