Last summer I was at a cemetery in Amsterdam called "Zorgvlied". It is situated along the river Amstel and it is possible to have the coffin transported by boat for a funeral which is very special.
The cemetery dates from 1870, the location used to be a manorial estate with an English country style garden with many trees.
Many well known Dutch people as writers and actors are burried here and you can even get a map at the entrance to find all the graves. You can see some in my former posts here
It is a nice parc to wander around and admire the stylish graves.
The newer graves are often artistic because of the many artistically-minded people layed to rest here.
This is my tribute to Taphophile Tragics
Thanks for this interesting post. A boat funeral does seem very special.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWhenever I hear of a boat funeral, I think of the 1965 funeral of Sir Winston Churchill when his coffin was on a barge going up the Thames. Being young, I was very impressed with that. I can only guess at how much that would cost nowadays.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI have been twice now to Pere LaChaise in Paris, and there too, one can purchase a map to hunt for the grave of the rich and famous.
I like the idea of the newer artisic graves, although I worry that the head in your last photograph may have been knocked off by vandals.
Thank you for your continued support of Taphophile Tragics, Marianne. I appreciate it very much.
These are rather elaborate graves. I hope you will show more examples.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBeautiful graves. I really like your Taphophile Tragics photos. Thanks for sharing them with us.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenFascinating artistic grave styles. Ik zou graag rond deze begraafplaats willen lopen.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThey are all so different and interesting to look at. That last one certainly is unusual.

BeantwoordenVerwijderenThat last grave is intriguing! I wonder about the person buried there!! A great collection of memorials - each one outdoing the next!!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenBeautiful shots for Julie's theme Bieb, I like the last one too, it kind of makes me feel that it signifies 'rest in peace'.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSuch interesting and elaborate monuments to the dead. I like exploring in old cemeteries.
