Taphophile Tragics # 3

Last summer I was at a cemetery in Amsterdam called "Zorgvlied". It is situated along the river Amstel and it is possible to have the coffin transported by boat for a funeral which is very special.
The cemetery dates from 1870, the location used to be a manorial estate with an English country style garden with many trees.

Many well known Dutch people as writers and actors are burried here and you can even get a map at the entrance to find all the graves. You can see some in my former posts here

It is a nice parc to wander around and admire the stylish graves.

The newer graves are often artistic because of the many artistically-minded people layed to rest here.

This is my tribute to Taphophile Tragics

  1. Thanks for this interesting post. A boat funeral does seem very special.

  2. Whenever I hear of a boat funeral, I think of the 1965 funeral of Sir Winston Churchill when his coffin was on a barge going up the Thames. Being young, I was very impressed with that. I can only guess at how much that would cost nowadays.

I have been twice now to Pere LaChaise in Paris, and there too, one can purchase a map to hunt for the grave of the rich and famous.

I like the idea of the newer artisic graves, although I worry that the head in your last photograph may have been knocked off by vandals.

Thank you for your continued support of Taphophile Tragics, Marianne. I appreciate it very much.
