Taphophile Tragics # 4

The grave of Elvis Presley at his estate Graceland in Memphis.

Elvis wanted a quiet place in his garden to get some rest and he had a Meditation Garden made. That is the place where he now is laid to rest with his parents and his grandmother.

The grave of his twin brother who died at birth.

I visited Graceland in 2008 and was quiet excited to see everything you always have heard and read of in reality. I am not a great Elvis fan so it was not a pelgrimage for me, but it was interesting to see where he had lived. The graves are not that bombastic as I had expected and despite the many tourists it was rather peaceful.

This is my tribute to Taphophile Tragics

  1. That is interesting, a celebrity,s grave. I didn't know he was born a twin. Wow imagine if he had lived we may have had twin idols.

  2. They do not look bombastic, which surprises me also. They do not even look religious which also surprises me. I used to be a Presley fan, until the Beatles came along. And once I gre up, I was a fan of neither of them!

I am glad you posted these shots. It is something that I will never see myself in real life. And it gives me a greater appreciation, that everything in his life was not garish and larger than life.

Thank you for posting to Taphophile Tragics this week, Marianne. I value your time and effort and support.

By the way, I knew enough to realise that Elvis was a twin!

  3. yes... it was more crowded when we were there (judging from your photos), but everyone was silent...
i have more or less the same pictures as you, and the same thoughts! not a crazy huge monument or anything, just the stone...

did you know that originally he was buried at a cemetery in memphis? but i think some months or even weeks after he was buried there, his father decided to move elvis's grave to the meditation garden since all the fans and crazy people and who-not were disturbing his grave... it was too difficult to protect it 24/7.

  6. I can well imagine how his gravesite would be tramp[led with tourists. I'm glad you found it to be a restful place in spite of the many visitors.

  8. I didn't know he was a twin, either. Interesting but still no wish to go out of my way to visit.

  9. For some reason I find it strange that you came from Amsterdam and took pictures of Elvis' grave. I guess I forget he was famous all over the world, not just here. I saw him when I was 9 years old at the Louisiana Hayride before anyone had ever heard of Elvis. Shortly after that he became a household name.

  10. CaT,
Now you mentione it, I realize I have ever read it indeed, I forgot.
    Kathy,
Elvis was very popular in Europe, I grew up in the sixties so rock and roll and pop music was our daily sound.

  11. When I moved to the Netherlands in 1977 I was very surprised that Railhouse Rock...an Elvis movie was showing in a theater in The Hague. I found out he was still VERY popular with some of the Dutch!

Enjoyed the pictures. My sister worshiped Elvis...so I did know he was a twin...
