Guess what

What do you think this is, many people call it "the bath tub".

It is the new expansion of the "Stedelijk Museum" (Museum for Modern Art) in Amsterdam which you can see on the left. We have waited for eight! years to see the result, all those years the museum has been closed and it still is. Maybe I am a pessimist but I think this is a rather dominant addition to the old building.

From this side it looks a lot better, when you don't see the other (old) buildings. They plan to open the museum september 2012, we keep our fingers crossed.

  1. Ja dat vind ik nou ook in stijl niet bij de rest passen. Waarom moet het altijd zo modern zijn dat het nergens meer bij past.

  4. It does look like a bathtub. I'm always open to artistic impression, but I'm stumped on this one too!

  5. September 2012? Finally. Every time I'm in Amsterdam I hope to visit Het Stedelijk, but it's always closed.

It will certainly take some time to get used to 'this'. ;-)

  6. Sorry, but I just find it a scandal that they put such an ugly builing next to a historical buidling. When normal people are not even allowed to place a satelite dish or change their front door in a different colour. Politics :-(

  7. I think it is a ridiculous addition. It's ugly and doesn't at all compliment the original buildings. Fire the committee who chose for thsi concept. No, put them on the firing line.

  8. Certainly does have an interesting shape to it! It will be interesting to see inside once it is opened. We have some buildings here in Perth that leave a lot to be desired in the architecture and one or two I am just waiting to see how they turn out when finally completed.

  9. Ja, dat vind ik ook meer dan een beetje leelijk. Het past er helemaal niet bij.

    I guess I just don't understand 'modern art' !

    Fijne zondag Marianne.

  10. CaT,
It had been in scaffoldings for years, so you couldn't see it very well. A few weeks ago they removed them and than you see this..

  11. wow. I read a little bit about the building.
I don't like it either. It looks so severe, and casts an awful shadow on the old facade.

  12. Good grief. Not the most sympathetic piece of architecture I've ever seen.

  13. Is this what they were doing all those years? pfff it is hideous, but in you last photo it is kind of ok-looking to me. I agree with you totally that when you see it next to the old building it is rather dominant (to say the least)

  14. What were the city council planners thinking of when they approved building this monstrosity? It ugly and completely unsympathetic to the existing wonderful old building!
When I lived in Amsterdam I visited this museum at least once a week (with my museumjaarkaart! :-)

  15. Fantastic!! A bathtub in the middle of your beautiful city!! Sadly, building ultra-modern buildings to overshadow or even replace our heritage seems to be a world trend.
