Lemmer

As I mentioned yesterday we drove further to a pretty little town called Lemmer in the province Friesland. It is one of the most famous water sport towns. The history of the town goes back the 14th Century and we saw some pretty old houses.

The houses are built along a canal with many terraces and where tourists boats come along all the time to pass form the IJssellake to the rivers.

Look how narrow it is here to pass with rather big boats.

The bridge had to be opened many times because there was a lot of shipping.

Through the lock the ships enter the city from the IJssellake.

One of the two lock-keeper houses.

You may think this is dutch language, but the funny part is, the province Friesland has its own language "Fries". I can understand this means "ijskoud" in dutch (ice-cold) but when people speak in Fries language to me, I don't understand. But we bought a nice ice-cream here without problems.
Hubby SC had also some nice photo yesterday here.

  1. This first photo is absolutely stunning and with the boats on the water, blue sky n clouds and houses nestled along the water's edge, kind of reminds me of home. The quality and design of the houses are stunning and dating back to the 14th century is most interesting. I love the outdoor tables and chairs resting beside the canal and it would be most interesting to be here and watch the activity along the canal and the rising of the bridge. The lock-keeper houses are beautiful. I like the "ice-cream parlour" too... in any language. I truly like that first photo and would like to copy and mail it on to my friend in the city, with your permission of course. Have a wonderful day. Lilly

  6. Although I am Dutch and live in Holland I've never been to Lemmer. But you know how it is, the beauty nearby you never go to but we've all been to the other side of the world... The human being is a funny creature!
