Ireland day 1

After a flight of one hour and 15 minutes we reached the coast of Ireland and landed in Dublin. The bus with driver Tommy was waiting for us and we drove right away to Northern Ireland. At the end of the journey we would return to Dublin and have a look in the city.

We visited Monasterboice a Middle Age settlement from the 5th century. It has ruines of a round tower and two churches and High Crosses from the 10th century.

The most famous Cross is the Muiredach's Cross I showed you in yesterday's post, it is 5.5 m.high and has biblical scenes.

Then we arrived in Belfast, a city with a long history of violence with bomb attacks and the IRA. Although there has signed a peace agreement now, the city gave a grim impression with the many billboards and barbed wire.

This is the Titanic museum opened in 2012 when the first tragic travel of the  famous ship in 1912 was remembered.

The Titanic was build in this wharf of  Harland and Wolff and here you can see the dimensions of the ship by the lines and poles on the ground, 840 ft long and 270 ft wide.

In the evening we made a little walk in the city and passed this "Crown Liquor Saloon", a pub dating from  1880 with a restored interior with stained glass windows, marble, Mosaic work and a magnificent ceiling. It was to dark inside to make pictures.

So we returned to our "cosy little" hotel on a parking lot.

  1. What a wonderful sequence of photos! The aerial shot with its lush greenness is what I imagine Ireland to look like, and I'm impressed with the tombstone photo. What a busy and exhausting day that must have been!

  3. Love the first shot Marianne and the Titanic Museum is incredible. Lovely old buildings but as you say some areas can be rather grim reminders of past times.

  7. Dearest Marianne,
Lovely photo taken from the plane; you had a very clear view without any cloud obstruction. We have been to that round tower, briefly during a work weekend with our host. And for those seminars we also drove through Belfast's streets that in previous days had been blown up by the IRA and that was in 1994 when we were there.
Lovely photos with fond memories! Thanks for sharing as it brings back fond memories for both of us.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  11. The poles, I think, really give the dimensions of the ship a sense of reality. I'd like to walk that wharf for myself. Beautiful shots! Ireland, both Ulster and the Republic, feature into my writing, and I expect I'll enjoy this series of photos a lot.
