This is me in the marble entrance hall of the Tropical Institute in Amsterdam.
During the Open Monuments weekend you had access to places which are normaly not open for visits.
This huge building from 1926 has a knowledge center and a museum about the former Dutch overseas regions. In this octagonal hall, twelve rare Italian types of marbles are incorporated.
It must have cost a fortune to realise this I suppose but I don't really like it. It is too pompous all those different types and colours of marble together.
This is the entrance to the building from the outside, right behind the door is the marble hall.
I agree that it appears a little busy. I like the idea of opening places that are usually closed to visitors. Cute photo of you.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHet is inderdaad erg pompeus, maar ik vind het wel mooi om te zien.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWell, it's magnificent even it would be a little over the top for my own living room. :-)
BeantwoordenVerwijderenFijn dat dit soort dagen er zijn, voor iedereen te bezoeken.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenWonderful building.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenAnd nice to see you. You look pretty.
Next weekend is Open House in London where we have access to buildings normally closed to the public. I always enjoy seeing what is behind the doors of some of our grand buildings just as you have in Amsterdam. The workmanship in this Institute does look quite remarkable.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI bet sounds and voices echoed throughout the building. You look as if you are making the grand entrance to greet all of your subjects.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt is quite opulent, and I like the angles you've taken for the shots. The concept is very much like Doors Open here.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenDearest Marianne,
BeantwoordenVerwijderenIt is a magnificent building that got build over 11 years of time, starting in 1920. We owe it to its 76 founders that each gave a minimum of 25,000 guilders so it got completed by 1926 as you already mentioned. Also the fact that this available as for conferences, weddings and receptions, catering and business dinners is so unique. For that purpose the marble is just great and by far not too pompous.
Also the Tropical Museum is of great value and The Netherlands played a big role in a vast knowledge about the tropics in general when we still had ‘Dutch Overseas Territories’. Since that belonged to the past it has changed to studying the tropics in general, including ‘cultural, economic and hygienic issue’.
We often have found great help in our field as international consultants, through all the work they did in the past!

Sorry, starting in 1910... typo!
BeantwoordenVerwijderenGreat opportunity to see these places; such a good idea! Good to learn about one's country in this visual way.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenThe open house days are a great idea. It is fun to be able to go inside these special buildings.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenMagnificent building Marianne, beautiful marble.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenHow nice to have a weekend with access to such beautiful buildings! The marble is beautiful, but a bit overwhelming.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenSuch a beauty! Here is something beautiful, which I have had the fortune of visiting {please note - not as a patient :) } http://blogs.umsl.edu/news/2011/08/30/mimh-grant/
