Monday Mural

Another part of the murals in the narrow alley in Leeuwarden of last week's post.
I recognize some images of Leeuwarden as the church tower and the exotic dancer/spy "Mata Hari" who was executed by firing squad in France under charges of espionage for Germany during World War I. She was born in Leeuwarden and the museum we visited had an exhibition about her.
The man in the centre I don't know who he is.

The lady in red is former Queen Beatrix and the building at the right is the Court of Justice I showed you in yesterday's post.

  1. Now I am feeling old. Queen Beatrix's Mom was Queen when I lived there. Looking back at last week's mural. I think the guy might be M.C. Escher.

    1. I think you are so right Janey, it must be Escher as he was born in Leeuwarden! It is incredable you noticed that!. I thought he had a familiar face but couldn't think who he was. Thanks a lot.

  5. I don't think I knew the story of Mata Hari, just the name. Your pictures of the wall art are fascinating, and I'm curious about how people get into doing these kinds of permanent art.

  6. Oh, sure! I knew it was Escher the first time I laid eyes on him. Either him or some great Norwegian explorer. :-)

  11. It appears at least in one spot that taggers were at work on it. The mural itself stands out beautifully.

  14. I had no idea that Mata Hari was Dutch. The Escher portrait looks like it's a statue. Any statues of him around? Isn't it amazing how murals can take you down an interesting path? Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
